The best Type 2 charging cables for 2026

A Type 2 cable connects a car to a public post or an untethered wallbox, and it is an active part of the circuit rather than a passive lead. Inside the plug sits a coding resistor that tells the car the maximum current the cable may carry, and the charge is limited to the smallest of three figures: the post, the car and that resistor. A 32 A cable on a 16 A post charges at 16 A; a 16 A cable on a 32 A post charges at 16 A too. Single or three-phase is the other decision, and a three-phase cable on a single-phase car simply uses one phase — it is heavier and not faster. Length is a real trade: five metres reaches most posts, ten reaches awkward ones and weighs and costs more. Conductor cross-section follows the current rating and decides that weight. The rest is handling: the flexibility of the sheath in winter, whether a bag is included, and how the cable coils without fighting back. We compare current rating and coding, phases, length, cross-section, flexibility, weight and storage.
