An inverter turns direct current from a battery into the alternating current an appliance expects, and the first thing to read is the waveform. A pure sine wave is what the grid delivers; a modified sine wave is a stepped approximation that costs less and that induction motors, some medical devices and many mains adapters either refuse or run hot on. Continuous output in watts is what the unit sustains, surge output is what it allows briefly, and the surge is only a specification when the maker attaches a duration to it. The figure that quietly empties a battery is idle consumption: an inverter left switched on with nothing plugged in still draws several watts, which over a weekend is measured in tens of watt-hours.
