A DC-DC charger sits between a vehicle’s starter battery and a second battery, and it exists because modern alternators stopped behaving like simple generators. A smart alternator varies its voltage to save fuel and often drops below what a leisure battery needs to reach full; wired directly, the second battery charges partially, or the alternator sees a lithium battery as a short and protects itself. The charger fixes both by taking whatever the alternator gives and rebuilding a proper charge curve. Output current in amps is the rating and decides how fast a day of driving refills the bank.
