The best battery shunts for 2026
A shunt is a precision resistor placed in the negative lead so that a monitor can measure current by the millivolts dropped across it. Its rating is a current and a corresponding output — 500 A giving 50 mV is a common pairing — and the monitor has to expect that same pairing or every reading is scaled wrong. The accuracy class published by the maker describes how far the resistance deviates, and temperature stability describes how much it drifts as the bar warms under load, which is the error that matters on a long discharge. Terminal sizes have to take the main battery cable on one side and the load cables on the other. The installation rule is absolute and worth repeating on the shelf: every negative connection in the system must pass through the shunt — including the small ones, a fridge, a charger, a solar controller — because a current that bypasses it is a current the monitor never counts. Compatibility is the last question: some shunts are sold bare, others are matched to one monitor family and will not talk to another.
