The best MC4 crimping tools for 2026

A crimped contact is not a squeezed one: done properly, the barrel and the strands deform into a gas-tight joint that behaves like a single piece of metal. Doing it properly is a question of the die, and a tool sold for MC4 work carries dies sized for the cross-sections these systems use — commonly 2,5, 4 and 6 mm². A die one size too large leaves a joint that passes a tug test and heats under load. A ratchet mechanism is what guarantees the crimp completes before the handles release, and the better tools allow that ratchet to be adjusted when it drifts. Most sets on this shelf include the two spanners that tighten the connector bodies, and some include a stripper; whether these are in the box is a real difference in price. Build materials and the handle geometry decide how the tool feels on the fortieth connector of a balcony installation. We compare die sizes, ratchet and its adjustment, included spanners and strippers, materials and kit contents.
