The best DC circuit breakers for 2026

A DC breaker does what a fuse does and can be reset, which makes it the usual choice on a solar string or a battery feed that may need isolating. The specifications are the same three as any protective device — rated current, rated voltage and breaking capacity — with the qualification that all three must be given for direct current. A breaker taken from a household consumer unit and used on a 400 V solar string is outside its design: the arc it has to extinguish does not stop on its own. Many DC breakers are also polarity-sensitive, with the input and output marked on the case, because the arc chute is designed to blow the arc in one direction; wired backwards, the device still switches and no longer protects. The number of poles matters on a string where both conductors are live to earth. Trip characteristics — the curve — decide how long an overload is tolerated before the breaker opens, and the curve that suits a motor is not the one that suits a panel string.
