A cable reel is judged on a number most buyers never see: its rating while still wound. A coiled cable cannot shed heat, so a reel that carries sixteen amps fully unwound may be rated for less than half that on the drum, and the two figures are printed on every compliant reel. Running a heater from a coiled reel is the single most common way to melt one, which is why a thermal cut-out is a specification worth confirming rather than assuming. Cable length and cross-section together decide the voltage drop at the far end — thirty metres of thin cable feeding a saw is a saw that starts slowly. The socket count and whether they are individually switched is a convenience; the ingress rating decides whether the reel may be used outdoors, and the rating applies with the flaps closed on sockets that are not in use. Drum construction — the frame, the slip ring, the handle — is what decides whether it survives a few years on site.
