A PWM controller is the simpler half of the shelf, and it is the right answer more often than the marketing suggests — provided the panel and the battery are voltage-matched. It works by switching the panel onto the battery and modulating that connection, so the panel ends up operating at the battery’s voltage: with a nominal 12 V panel on a 12 V battery the loss is modest, and with a 36-cell panel on a 24 V bank it is severe. That is the whole decision. Charge current is again the rating to read, and the panel voltage the controller is designed for is a hard constraint rather than a preference. Many units on this shelf carry a load output — a switched terminal for lights or a pump, with a timer or a dusk sensor — which an MPPT controller often lacks, and which makes a PWM unit the neater answer for a garden light or a gate.
